Polynucleotides are a relatively recent addition to aesthetic treatments and have gained popularity due to their ability to promote bio-regeneration in the skin. When injected or microneedled in to the skin they facilitate repair and rejuvenation with minimal risk. While they don't provide immediate results, they can be safely applied to the face, scalp, and body and within a short time, provide fantastic improvements.

What are Polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides are naturally derived molecules that play a crucial role in stimulating cellular activity, promoting collagen production, and facilitating skin rejuvenation. Sourced from the DNA of salmon or trout sperm, these highly purified DNA fragments are suspended in water for to preserve them & make them usable for injections or microneedling.
How do they work?
Once injected, the DNA fragments are gradually absorbed into the skin. As they integrate, they signal the skin in three primary ways. First, they stimulate fibroblast cells to increase in number and enhance their activity. As cell renewal improves, so do collagen production, hydration levels, and skin radiance. The skin becomes more resilient with increased elasticity, and wrinkles begin to diminish.
Second, they act as potent antioxidants, eliminating free radicals that typically cause cellular damage. Third, they function as wound healing agents, prompting the skin to undergo intensive repair. This aids in improving scars, reducing stretch marks, and addressing skin texture issues. As the skin enters repair mode, discolouration improves (hyperpigmentaion reduces), resulting in a more even tone. Additionally, polynucleotides create a mild increase in volume and tightening as an overall effect.
The outcome of the treatment depends on several factors, including the extent of skin aging prior to the treatment, the skin’s capacity to regenerate high-quality tissue when stimulated, and lifestyle. However, they are extremely popular for very good reason and whatever your skin concerns an improvement can be achieved.
Where can Polynucleotides be used?
Polynucleotides have been proven to enhance skin texture and function, making them suitable for any skin area, including the scalp for promoting hair growth. We can focus on specific areas like the under-eye, forehead, or mouth, or treat the entire face. At Skin within we prefer to microneedle the entire face then use the Mesotherapy Technique to superficially inject concentration of product into areas of specific concern. Remember, they are not just for the face, on the body, they are commonly used for loose skin on the abdomen, above the knees, or on the inner arms.
Polynucleotides are often preferred for certain areas because they do not cause water retention like hyaluronic acid. In the under-eye region, polynucleotides can enhance skin strength and integrity instead tear trough treatment with dermal fillers. You will require a consultation & patch test before your treatment.
What does Polynucleotide treatment involve?
Polynucleotides are administered very superficially into the skin using two methods. They can be injected with extremely small needles, creating tiny blebs on the surface. These blebs typically disappear within a few hours, though they may persist longer for some individuals and bruising can occur. Alternatively, products can be microneedled into the skin which is particularly good for full face treatments, at Skin Within, Microneedling is usually part of all Skin Booster Treatments. It's important to remember, polynucleotides work at the cellular level, which takes time. While some improvement might be seen after 2-3 weeks, the full effect becomes apparent at 3 months.
Are Polynucleotides the same as Fillers?
No. Dermal fillers are composed of a gel with varying consistencies of hyaluronic acid. They primarily work through a physical volumising effect filling out the face. Dermal fillers provide an immediate result and continue to improve over the next 3-4 weeks & they typically last between 6-12 months.
Polynucleotides function differently. They promote cell regeneration, which means visible changes take time to appear but they are effectively repairing your skin for the longer term.
Polynucleotides at Skin Within
At the Skin Within Clinic we use a variety of Polynucleotides, I've described a couple of my favourites below.
